A former gamer and Harvard-trained psychiatrist offers a proven, tested plan to help parents define, set, and reinforce healthy boundaries around video games and help kids who have developed an addiction to gaming.
How much should I let them play? How do I get them to be interested in anything else?!
When it comes to family rules around video games, most parents are at a loss. After all, our technologically invasive world is something previous generations didn’t have to wrestle with, so we have no model for how to guide our families through the rapidly changing landscape, no blueprint for setting healthy gaming boundaries and keeping them in place.
A former Harvard Medical School instructor and one of the foremost experts on video game psychology, Dr. Alok Kanojia—known as “Dr. K” to his millions of followers—has firsthand knowledge of this modern issue: He needed professional help to break his own gaming habits in college, an experience that fueled his interest in learning how to help others. Drawing on Dr. K’s professional specialization in working with people of all ages and varying degrees of addiction, and the most recent research from neuroscience and psychology, How to Raise a Healthy Gamer teaches parents a new skill set for negotiating gaming culture and offers solutions rooted in the science of treating addiction, including:
An eight-week, step-by-step road map for setting, enforcing, and troubleshooting healthy gaming boundaries.
Advice on how to react when your child becomes irritable, rude, or seemingly directionless.
Essential communication strategies for reaching kids who have developed a serious gaming problem.
The neuroscientific and psychological reasons that children gravitate to video games and how to help them meet these needs in real life.
Insights and advice on dealing with behavioral issues that often accompany game use: ADHD, spectrum disorders, and substance abuse.
Whether your goal is to prepare your child for a healthy relationship to technology or to curb unhealthy amounts of time spent gaming, How to Raise a Healthy Gamer will help you better understand, communicate with, and—ultimately—empower your gaming enthusiast to live their best life.

Best book I’ve read this decade – EVEN IF you’re NOT a parent or a gamer, this book is a must-read.
Feeling like your kid’s living in their computer or console or phone? Addicted to tech yourself, just like me? Dr. K’s epic book is a lifesaver! This book, by a former gaming-obsessed doc (who gets it!), is a breath of fresh air, and it’s about WAY more than just gaming and parenting!!EVEN IF you’re NOT a parent or a gamer yourself, this book is a must-read. Dr. K cracks the code on communication and understanding people, especially those who might be a little hooked on something â games, social media, you name it.Forget yelling “screen time’s over!” Dr. K shows you how to actually connect with your child and understand why they love games so much. Then, he gives you sneaky ninja tricks (okay, maybe not sneaky) to help them find a healthy balance and explore other awesome stuff. This book isn’t about punishment, it’s about working together. It’s like having a wise, funny friend walk you through the whole video game thing, or any situation where connection seems impossible. With Dr. K’s help, you can raise a kid who rocks both the real world and the digital one (or, you know, just navigate any relationship with a newfound understanding).

As a 45 y/o woman who got addicted to video games herself, protect your kiddos.
This book has some really good advice in it and this topic needs to be discussed more. He explains how kids/people get addicted to video games and helps the reader understand what addicted kids are going through. You cannot help someone with video game addiction, until you really understand how this happens. Then he gives great parenting advice on exactly how to go about getting your child or older kid on board with improving their life while still keeping games in their life. My only thing I want to add is that some people/kids will just be better off quitting cold turkey as this gaming addiction thing is really hard to manage. I couldn’t believe it happened to me as a 45 yo woman. Never expected that video games would take such a hold on me. Thanks to the author for bring light to this issue that parents really need help navigating.

All parents of gamers should have this knowledge.
As a Ludologist, I bought this book to study. However, after reading it, I believe this is the best book for a parent with a child who has an unhealthy relationship with video games. As someone who struggled with video game addiction in my childhood, I wish this book would have been around many years ago for my parents to read. The book is very thorough and it outlines the approach I hope to take someday if I too become the parent of a gamer.

Good for your inner child, too
I gamed daily for more than two decades. Dr. Kanojia saved me and my future. This book is a great starting point and, for me, a solid consolation of the work he has already helped me do. And now I have the tools and know-how to help my siblings with their children; maybe one day with my own.
