The Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector, Hardwired Interconnect Combination Smoke & CO Alarm with Battery Backup & Voice Alert, model KN-COSM-IBA, is an AC-wired, ionization alarm operates on a 120VAC power source with 2-AA battery backup. Using ionization sensor technology, the wired smoke alarm detects invisible fire particles. The combination CO detector provides continuous protection from carbon monoxide, even during power outages. A red LED will flash & be accompanied by 3 long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning that warns of fire, carbon monoxide, & low battery. The Hush feature silences the fire alarm for approximately 9 minutes. The green LED on the alarm will flash every 2 seconds when Hush is activated and canceled. A maximum of 24 Kidde devices can be interconnected in a multiple station arrangement, but cannot exceed the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) limit of 18 initiation devices, of which 12 can be smoke alarms. With 18 initiating devices (smoke, heat, CO, etc.), interconnected, it is still possible to interconnect 6 strobe lights and or relay modules. UL Certified with a 10-year limited warranty. Meets requirements of UL 2034, UL217, NFPA72, The State of California Fire Marshall, NFPA 101, FHA, & HUD.

Great for Replacing Old Kidde Alarms
I bought this product to upgrade my 11 year old Kidde smoke detectors throughout my house.Pros:+ Comes with a wiring harness receptacle compatible with my old Kidde smoke alarm (I didn’t have to touch my existing wiring)+ Installation with pre-existing wiring took about 5 minutes per alarm with a Philips screw driver as the only tool+ Comes with two additional adapters to allow conversion from an incompatible harness to the one this unit uses (Edit: First Alert, BRK and FIREX are the other harnesses supported)+ The batteries are 2 AA and accessible without removing the unit from the ceiling (my old one used 9-Volt batteries)+ Comes with 2 alkaline AA batteries in the box+ The alarm tells you with a recorded voice whether the alarm is smoke or carbon monoxide and it is intelligible+ The adapter plate works well with different screw mounting scenarios+ It is white – my old alarm was more of a Navajo white+ Testing the alarm sets off all the alarms that are networked (the older ones went off too)+ The plate covers the same or a little more than my old fire alarm so there are no visible marks from the old one+ Since my house is hardwired for it, the alarm in any part of my house can set off all the alarms in the entire house giving quicker time to react (if you don’t have the wiring in place this is not the product for you)+ There is a visible green LED light when the unit is powered by the 120V AC systemCons:- It costs a bit more than the version that requires removing the unit from the ceiling to replace the batteries- There are a few warning labels on the sides that are white and yellow that are hard to peel off – they are small and hard to see on ceiling though- Edit (01-25-2015): There is a product recall on this unit on Kidde’s website under “For Owners -> Product Alerts” for alarms with this model number, however the date on the alarms I purchased through Amazon is 2014 Jun 25 which is not covered by the recall as of this writing – I have personally not observed any false alarms with the units I have so farWhy buy this unit over just a smoke detector? A few years ago my brother and his wife nearly died from carbon monoxide poisoning at their vacation cabin. The furnace had developed a problem without warning and as my brother and his wife went to bed she became ill. He tried to help her but was virtually paralyzed in bed and only able to reach for the phone next to him to call 911. Realizing that they were in big trouble his wife managed to crawl to the window and get it open before she became incapacitated. The paramedics arrived a bit later and they are fine now.

Keep the old one
The detector was just what I needed. The only issue I had was the hard wire lead that came with it did not fit the old wire box. I had to use the old hard wire tail to replace the new one & it works great.

Works well and easy to install but I’d like it to speak the location of the fire
PRO: Easy to install in place of an old unit. The hardest part was unscrewing the caps on the old wiring harness and screwing the caps on the new one.PRO: No false alarms in the month and a half that they have now been installed.PRO: Has battery backup so it will work when the electricity goes out.PRO: Uses AA batteries instead of 9 volts. (I always have AA on hand.)PRO: The batteries can be changed without taking the unit off the ceiling.PRO: All four units I installed talk to each other through the house wiring. I press the test button on one and they all go off.PRO: Compatible with the older Kidde KN-COSM-IB model. I had one of those installed when my basement was refinished. I did not have to replace it when I got these.CON: Does not use rechargeable batteries. It would be nice if the unit kept the batteries charged so that you didn’t have to replace them.CON: Doesn’t speak the location of the fire. Some other units I viewed are programmable. You can enter the location of the unit so you can have them say where the fire is. This unit does not have that feature. Instead the unit that detected the problem flashes a red light so you have to go around and check them all.CON: Not internet enabled.

Easy install, uses AA batteries + hard wire
When I think of smoke/co sensors, Kidde is usually the brand that pops into mind. I’ve had this brand of detectors in multiple homes over the years and have never had many issues – up until now I guess. I purchased this to replace another of the exact same model that was about 8 years old. It wouldn’t stop “chirping” even after unplugging and replacing batteries. They’re supposed to be good up to 10 years so I guess it did pretty well. This replacement was easy to swap in and worked right away with no problem. I also like that these use AA batteries instead of 9V (mostly because I never seem to just have those on hand so I have to go out and get them or place another order).

Work well, good value
I purchased these as a replacement for 6 of my 7 hardwired smoke detectors after the old ones malfunctioned. They were easy to install and have proven effective. The one closest to the kitchen accidentally triggers way more often than the previous ones, which never went off because of drips in the oven, but that’s a good problem to have. The voice is loud, clear, and all the alarms consistently go off on every floor of the house when one is triggered. They give me great peace of mind.

Reliable Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector
When looking for a reliable smoke & carbon monoxide detector, Kiddle delivers. The removal and installation process is straightforward and took me a few minutes to setup. For reference, my previous Kiddle detector lasted about 7 years so it didn’t quite reach the 10 year mark I was hoping for. Unlike other smoke detectors that have a blinding status light, especially at night, Kiddle’s status light is a soft green that won’t disturb you when trying to sleep. The alarm is loud when it goes off, but it does the job of getting your attention as it should in case of an emergency. Below are my ratings for each category:Quality: 4/5 starsPrice: 4/5 starsReliability: 4/5 stars

I had an existing smoke detector in my home which I purchased 20 years ago. I believe that I recently heard that you must change them every 10 years to ensure that they are going to work when needed. Well, no point in having them if they are going to work so I ordered these. I have been slowly upgrading most things in my home to smart devices and since smoke and CO detectors are so important, thought it best to do so with these also. I have never had on in my basement which is, IMO, where one is most needed. It did require me doing some electrical work because it does need a box to mount on, but that was no issue. If you are not able to do this yourself, hire an electrician, it is less than an hours work. If you are simply replacing existing detectors, it takes seconds. To be honest, I cant say how good the instructions are as I didn’t read them. These devices have 3 wires (white, black and ground) an it is simple to connect. Once they are both installed, they piggy back on your Wi-Fi to communicate with each other. If one is tripped, they both go off. The only feature that they are missing is a safety light once activated but, truthfully, a bright light in a smoky hall is actually blinding anyway, These are a great value at 120 for the pair. Many others smart devices cost that for an individual unit.

I liked the fact that it was so easy to install! Our existing device expired and recently there have been a number of carbon monoxide poisoning in our city! I feel much safer having replaced the old device!

My personal opinion is that these are needlessly complicated compared to older detectors; but I can understand arguments for having an integrated system of detectors. They could be improved by avoiding proprietary features allowing safe integration of any detector. Safety first! This was a one-for-one straight replacement of an older version of the exact same detector. I had the original manual which indicated that the warning beep that the older detector emitted indicated a pre-expiry-date failure of the alarm. I’m not an expert, so I had to wing-and-prayer trust my interpretation of the manual. The packaged arrived from Amazon in one of their plastic bags, and had been crushed in shipping (see image of unopened box) resulting in the distortion of the three connector pins. Despite this, I was able to reshape the pins with pliers and install the detector in the original carriage. No beep. Tested and working. Problem solved.I would say that if it can survive this abuse and still do the job, then it’s a pretty good product.
