Fixed ALL my problems! Read this review! 5/5
I live upstairs in my apartment and the signal was constantly dropping or very weak. Could barely use my phone, laptop had slow speeds and I was constantly losing my connection on my Xbox one and lagging during my online play which was the kicker behind getting this product. Being that I’m a college student and its 2015 you basically have to have good internet speed and connection for anything to work properly and I have about 4 devices that I use on a daily basis in my room. I bought this for $37 on Amazon warehouse under the “buy used” section because the box had a quarter inch dent in it so they couldn’t sell it new lol. I got the package in about 4 days. I plugged in the connector to a wall outlet and connected the Ethernet cable from it to the router, waited for the lights to light up, once the lights lit up I went up stairs to my room where I have bad internet and plugged up the adapter, once that one lit up I plugged the Ethernet cord from it to my computer and it automatically popped up on my web browser where I was able to set up the network with a password and begin using the Internet. I have my Xbox hard wired from the adapter and my phone and laptop are connected from the adapters wifi. ALL my internet problems are gone. Xbox has a beatifull smooth connection with zero lag and my phone and laptop work flawlessly now as far as connectivity and speed with the Internet. This technology takes your routers internet and runs it through the electrical system of the house like an Ethernet cord until it connects with the other adapter. Once it connects with the adapter it’s theoretically hard wired pushing out a connection the exact same way as if you were to run an Ethernet cord from your router through the walls upstairs. I basically get connection as if the router was in my room. This product works with macs so idk why it wasn’t working for some of the other reviewers that I saw but it worked fine with mine. This thing literally took me all of 5 minutes to install. if you have a basic knowledge of setting up a router and if you know the basics of internet you shouldn’t have a problem with this. Totally worth it. Heck knowing what I know now, I’d probably pay the full 70 bucks for it because it worked so good. No point in buying the upgraded model this thing works fine. Remember this won’t fix slow internet if you don’t have fast internet. If you only pay for 3 megs then you might want to upgrade your speed with your internet company before you go out and buy this. Also a lot of connection issues can be fixed completely if you just upgrade your router. If you have a router that’s 10 years old that’s 99% likely to be your problem, I tend to see this a lot… “Why is my internet so crappy I pay for 20megs!” Me-“probably because your router is from 2003… *slowly walks away nodding head in shame.” But if you have a good router and you pay for fast internet and the signal is just poopy in a certain area or side of the house/upstairs then this thing is perfect for you. 5/5

Used to work as advertised
Set up was easy. A little struggle getting the wi-fi extender secured but that was due to operator and not related to the product. Using Ethernet port on wi-fi, also works well. I would recommend this purchase.9.11.14 I am changing prior review for a couple reasons. While in the initial set up we switched to an iMac and the power line extender worked perfectly. Even though I then found out Netgear did not have a working solution to their ‘Genie’ configuration dashboard to work with Apple products…it happens, and it did limit being able to configure and change settings. After finding out Netgear wasn’t very interested in developing an application to run on the Maverick platform, minor disappointment. Since then we moved and when I installed the power line extender and access point at our new residence problems started. Sporadic connection between the extender and access point and an increasing problem with the extender (XAV5201) putting itself in power saving mode – amber lights. I’ve since initiated a series of messages between Netgear’s “Support Experts” and myself where they have asked me to reconfigure (and I have after digging out my old Windows based computer), moved the access point closer, do hard resets and repeat some of these things after my request for support was handed off to a different “Expert”. Bottom line problem is the power line extender (XAV5201) will not stop looping itself into power saving mode, until that’s fixed it’s impossible to troubleshoot anything else. Online research indicates others have experienced the same problem with Netgear products and not one of the cases I read about resulted in Netgear stepping up and resolving it. Same experience for me. I’ve said to them I’m done messing around, my equipment is within warranty and I want an RMA so it can be fixed or replaced. The “Experts” respond with more copy/paste links from the owners manual and requests for me to try same fixes proposed earlier. I’m not convinced the newest “Expert” has even read the entire thread of my service request, indicated by some of the questions asked.I don’t think Netgear is willing to stand behind this product. It’s the first and last product I’ll ever purchase from them.

Very happy with this product. Took my internet wi fi from the house to my workshop about 200 yards away thru the main house electrical panel thru to the elctrical panel in the workshop and to an outlet in the workshop. 100% signal. Couldnt get any internet there before. Found the instructions a bit confusing with syncing the security buttons…they seemed to sync themselves.?? The electrical to the workshop is off the main panel not a separate line.

The powerline works quite well, I connect the powerline adapter to the router upstairs and have the access point plugged in an outlet downstairs. This really helps with receiving wifi in old dead zones.Setup was quick and easy too.

Transaction was great. The unit works okay however I don’t really get the kind of speed I was expecting though. I am unsure if it is the setup, house wiring etc. More work needed to get it working as I would expect.

Worked well for the first couple months but then started randomly dropping devices and now allowing them to reconnect to wifi with a “incorrect password” error. The entered password was 100 percent correct and would eventually work after re-entering 20 times or restarting the access point. Extremely frustrating and not worth the hassle. The wired powerline portion is much more reliable but the wireless extension seems to be complete garbage.
