Easy to use, works great!
I just moved into a new home (well, 90’s home, but new to me) and needed a quick way to hook up my windows media center, my desktop PC, my XBox, and a machine in another room.I bought three of these adapters, plugged them into the wall, and then hooked them up to switches in two of the rooms, and directly into the PC in the third room.I believe I had to press a button to get the devices to find each other, but they did so quickly, and have been maintenance free since (at least six months). There are simple status lights that tell you whether the device is working correctly, and the quality of its connections to other devices. My backups go every night over these devices from my downstairs machines to my server upstairs. I stream HD video from my windows media center upstairs to my xbox media extender downstairs. I play Xbox games from downstairs going over these devices to my internet connection upstairs. Sometimes my wife is watching videos / playing with photos (hosted upstairs) on her machine downstairs while I play COD Black Ops on the xbox downstairs, and everything still works fine.Do I get 500 Mbps from this? Probably not, I think I get somewhere between 30 and 100 Mbps. But I never have video playback problems, and am able to back-up two machines every night (incremental backups) over them, so I’m extremely satisfied!

Didn’t work for me
These worked great in the upper two floors of my house. Unfortunately I needed to get internet to the basement and they didn’t do that. If you have coax cable you might want to give MoCA a try. Ended up using Action MoCA a try after going through countless wireless and powerline options and MoCA works great.

Powerline works fine but…
Powerline networking works fine and the Netgear adapters are fine products. However, so far the AV 500 adapters do not perform any better than the AV 200 adapters I had in place before I ordered the 500’s. With either I get about 120Mbit between the same plugs. Just as a warning. Don’t think that you are going to increase your bandwidth by going to the higher speed adapter.

More Than I Expected – Part 1
I just received my Netgear Powerline AV 500 today. I was replacing the my other Netgear AV 200 just because I wanted better speed with my page loads and downloading. Well I it’s as easy as advertised, plug and play. That’s not the best part. I’m getting 1gb download speed!!! I have 3 of these with 1 connected to my router and the other 2 connected to my computers. It also works with my AV 200 which I have connected to my 3rd computer. This is just part 1 of the review because I haven’t hooked up the new wireless HP 6500A Plus printer I bought yet and I have not downloaded any HD content. By the way it does not hurt either to have CAT 6 Ethernet cables connected to your network.

A great product!
I was having trouble getting wi-fi to all parts of the house. I bought an Edimax repeater, but it would drop on occasion, especially when we took a power hit, requiring a laptop to be connected to it by a cable to resync and reboot, and it resulted in lower speeds. I plugged one of the AV 500s into the wall socket next to the cable modem upstairs in the front of the house and ran an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the AV500. I pluged another AV500 into the wall socket downstairs next to my computer and also connected it by ethernet cable. I plugged a third AV500 into a socket in the back of the house downstairs and ran a cable from it to the former repeater, now reset to be a wireless access point (its default setting). I pushed the sync button, as instructed, on the AV500 at the cable modem then walked to the other two and pushed their sync buttons (you have 2 minutes to complete this so you don’t have to rush). Everything synced up perfectly and worked without a hitch. They have been running several weeks now and what a pleasure! Speed differentials (using speedtest.net) are: PC on wireless direct to the cable modem was 6800 Mbps download, 4800 Mbps upload; now wired through the AV500, it is 23,600 Mbps download and 18,200 upload. The laptop using the repeater was 3400 download and 2100 upload; now using the repeater reset to wireless access point, it is 9600 download and 7400 upload. The house is 30 years old so I think I would get even higher speeds in a newer house’s wiring system. I highly recommend it. Follow the easy instructions and you can’t go wrong.

Slower than expected throughput but easy setup
The setup was a breeze with easy to follow instructions. The utility software (Mac or PC) is not required for use but provides useful information about these units connections is downloadable from Netgear along with a more detailed install manual. Neither the detailed manual or software was in the box. As far as setup goes, these are 5-stars. Plug them, wait for solid lights, hold the security button on one for 2 seconds, then go to the others and press their security buttons for 2 seconds. So long as you do all of the security button pressing within 2 minutes of each other you’re good to go.However the reason I bought this add-on adapter (along with the 2 adapter kit) was to get an improvement over my wireless network speeds. Unfortunately despite getting an “amber light” indicating 50Mb-80Mb throughput and their software utility stating connection speeds of 75Mb, actual throughput between computers tops out like a hitting a brick wall at 18Mb even for large compressed files. That is slower than my wireless network and inadequate for streaming my very high bitrate 1080P videos from my server to my HTPCs. Oh well. These are PERFECT if you just need a simple 10-15Mb connection for Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, iTunes or other low bitrate video applications but for me they didn’t work as well as advertised. I’m disappointed.Throughput is about 18Mb in my application. Latency is good at 1ms to my router, 15ms to the first hop (which is the same I get with my wired connections).
