The story is not only well-written and straightforward but also introduces a powerful role model in its main character. The illustrations that bring the tale to life set this book apart, elevating the reading experience to a visual delight.More than just a narrative, “Papa the Popular Printer” serves as a valuable tool for teaching history in a format that young children can easily grasp. It ingeniously combines storytelling with historical and character building lessons, making it an engaging and educational read for families. Dive into the pages of this enchanting book and embark on a journey that celebrates resilience, ambition, and a slice of African American history. While the book may be a bit long for the suggested age range, I really like the idea of parents and children, or teachers and children, or aunts or grandparents and children reading together. Wonderful, uplifting story!
I found Papa The Popular Printer to be filled with great life lessons for kids – respect, faith, strong work ethic, perseverance, dedication, curiosity, and courage. I love that it is based on the author’s grandfather! What a loving tribute to a lost relative’s life story. I found the book incredibly inspiring and uplifting, and I’m sure it will leave its readers feeling that if J.H. can do these things, with all that was stacked against him in society at the time, I need to have the courage to do hard things too. In addition, it can be a great conversation starter with young people about the discrimination and fear that existed in our past (and still does today on a smaller scale) and how one man courageously overcame that to leave a legacy. I highly recommend this book!

A touching tribute and memorable portrayal
Papa the Popular Printer is a touching tribute to the life of James Forniss. To do what he did, especially in AL during this time, is nothing short of amazing. His granddaughter, author Yankson, writes a memorable portrayal in a classic, straight-forward, no nonsense manner. The balanced illustrations express Fornissâ various stages of life in a respectful light as he navigates childhood, apprenticeship, marriage, business ownership, and civic-minded responsibilities.

A Story About Overcoming
Reading this to my 5 year old and my 10 year old was a joy. They both enjoyed the story. My ten year old loved that it was a true story, and it encouraged him in being faithful in all things. A great lesson for all children. I plan to buy a few copies to give away.

What a warm and wonderful book. This true story is inspiring and a good example of the power of family and faith. James Henry Forniss was clearly a strong Christian man who lived an exemplary life worthy of a role model. In the book (written by his granddaughter) his story is presented for young readers who desperately lack good role models.I like that the story takes us a step back in history. Though there were different obstacles then, it is also of great benefit for children to reflect on the good values and ways of life that are now increasingly being forgotten and replaced by degenerate behaviour. The illustrations are also top notch. They follow the story very well, are expressive, and, in a way, welcoming (if that makes sense). The book is well worth adding to your childâs library.
