The best of the best in gaming from a single decade: 1988-1998!
The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1988-1998 is the follow-up to my best-selling book, The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987. A gorgeous, full-color hardcover, it picks up right where the first book left off, covering the next decade in the history of video games in incredible detail. Each of the 100 games featured has 2 to 3 full pages of thorough coverage, including history, production info, author anecdotes, developer quotes, gameplay details, reviews, box art, screenshots, vintage magazine ads, fun facts, and more. This is a fun, colorful book!
As many gamers know, the period this book covers–1988-1998–is incredibly crucial to the video game industry. It was during this time that the NES reached its zenith with such titles as Contra and Super Mario Bros. 3, the Sega Genesis blew everyone away with Sonic the Hedgehog, the Super Nintendo released to critical acclaim with perhaps the greatest pack-in game of all time (Super Mario World), the Sony PlayStation took video games to the next level with games like Metal Gear Solid and Tomb Raider, and the Nintendo 64 broke new ground with 3D Mario and 3D Zelda. Games for other consoles are included in this book as well, such as the TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo, 3DO, and Sega Saturn, CD, and 32X. There’s even an Atari Jaguar game! There are obvious choices in the book as well as some dark horse picks–you’ll have a blast flipping through the pages with friends and arguing over which titles should and shouldn’t have been included.
During this phenomenal era, a TON of great games were released, but I and my team of writers narrowed the field down to the best of the best. I wrote more than a dozen of the 100 chapters in the book, while other writers and industry notables contributed chapters on their favorite games. Among other terrific talents, these creators include: Greg Sewart, former editor for Electronic Gaming Monthly; Shane Stein, Executive Producer of Adventures in Game Chasing; Brian Lesyk, host of the Pass The Controller podcast; Kale Menges, game artist and developer; Matt Miller, high score champion; Krystle Tiedeman, producer of The King of Arcades; and Patrick Hickey Jr., voice actor and author of The Minds Behind The Games book series. Further, popular YouTuber and author Chris “The Irate Gamer” Bores wrote an incredibly insightful foreword, and I provide context and other info with my preface to the book. The contributing writers did a fantastic job–I truly believe you will have as much fun reading their awesome work as I did. And I enjoyed it a lot!
The 100 Greatest Console Video Games Vol. 2: 1988-1998 is a nostalgic walk down memory lane for seasoned gamers and a great history lesson for younger folks and casual gamers. And it is entertaining and educational for everyone! Finally, the long-awaited follow-up to The 100 Greatest Console Video Games: 1977-1987 will be here in late 2022!

A great collection for retro gaming fans and enthusiasts!
Iâve got a number of retro gaming books and books on gaming, in general. Brettâs 100 Greatest Console Videogames is a stand out book on my shelf, and any other fans shelf. If youâre a younger gamer looking back at years before you were born, or nostalgically looking back at this era yourself, there is plenty of coverage of games you love and maybe even missed. A Google search or YouTube video is always a random roll of quality and doesnât give you the details; this book does. Great job! Iâve got other books by Brett Weiss and will continue to look out for more projects by him in the future!
THIS IS A BOOK!!! NOT A GAME CARTRIDGE!!! –
THIS IS A BOOK!!! NOT A PLAYABLE GAME!!!
I did not know that this was a book. I was extremely disappointed to find that this was not a game cartridge that included all the games listed. Maybe I am dumb but I really thought this was an emulator.

A great book that covers the Greatest Decade in Gaming History
I love this book but the choices in the book are questionable like Where’s MegaMan X and Klonoa Door To Phantomile?Still I highly recommend you check the book out!

Great collection
Don’t personally agree with the rankings I suppose, but a fun look back at some games I’d forgotten and now want to go back and play. Perfect gift for any old gamers on your list.

Great book, very detailed and interesting
Some entries are lacking details hence the 4 star review but overall a fantastic book!

Amazing as always!
Like all of Brettâs books, this one hits the mark and delivers exactly what youâd expect!

You’re the author of this book too!
This is a general review for all Weiss’s books. Weiss, for the past 20+ years, has relied on everyone else to research his books. When he pops up like a prairie dog onto your Facebook group or forums (remember those?), rest assured that any question you answer for him or fact you offer up is doing his work for him and will end up in his books. He has been ostracized in the past for this lazy tactic (a fun game is going through his post history on AtariAge and DigitalPress – see if you can spot the “casual” questions), but the new generation of classic gamers/collectors need to keep eye out for when he weasels into the picture. Just use Google for the top line info he peddles or buy the products of other authors like HardcoreGaming 101 (who actually do the legwork themselves), folks and don’t give him a dime.

Top notch video game history book
Brett delivers a quality overview with lots of insight. Itâs the definitive book focused on this time period of video game history.

Pre-ordered for June 2022 and got it six months later. Book is well made and the cover is solid as a rock to protect the pages. I pre-ordered based on reviews of the previous book but have to say that I am a little disappointed because there aren’t enough photos of the actual games that they are reviewing and the text is super small. How can you review video games and have only 1 or 2 pictures of the game ? Mostly they are pictures of nothing happening in the games as well…
