Video Game Law is aimed at game developers and industry professionals who want to better understand the industry or are in need of expert legal guidance. Given the rise in international competition, the increasing complexity of video game features, and the explosive growth of the industry in general, game developers can quickly find themselves in serious trouble, becoming vulnerable to copyright infringement claims, piracy, and even security breaches. Not every video game company has the financial resources to retain in-house counsel, which Video Game Law seeks to address by discussing many of the common pitfalls, legal questions, and scenarios facing the industry. S. Gregory Boyd, Sean F. Kane, and Brian Pyne, the most prominent, sought after, and respected video game attorneys in the country, break down the laws and legal concepts that every game developer and industry professional needs to know in order to protect their game and grow their company.

Invaluable Gaming Industry Law Reference for New and Veteran Game Execs Alike
I have been a game studio owner for 10 years now, and Greg Boyd’s prior book was the primer I used gain the foundational knowledge I needed to make that leap into the true business end of the video game business. This new volume, updated and adapted to a decade+ of massive changes in an ever quickly-evolving industry, is an even better legal reference, and should be considered required reading for everyone looking to build good companies and good games. Even if you have been in the trenches for years to decades of running a company, you have only had your own limited personal experiences, seen your own trends and practices, while this book gives you a broader view of what is done well (and often what is done badly, which can be even more helpful to learn) across thousands of deals and contracts. Far from being a dry legal slog, the authors have written the different chapters in an approachable and readable manner, that feels like a conversation with a trusted adviser.

No need to be a lawyer – useful guide for startups too!
I received a copy of this book from a friend as a gift and have found it to hold a wealth of information in regard to the, often obtuse, legal side of game development. I am now working at an indie game startup, and there is no formula for how to approach each challenge. From licensing agreements to copyright and intellectual property rights, I’ve cracked open this book again and again to reference things to be proactive about. Even though it’s not meant to be a guide for indie studios, it provides a detailed map of the legal minefield any new studio will need to cross. It’s written plainly, not in legalese, and is refreshingly frank about the realities of game law. The sections are to-the-point and it is not meant to be a classroom textbook, but it packs a punch – information-wise.I would highly recommend any game startup pick up a copy and would absolutely insist that any lawyer wishing to get into game law, or already working with a game studio, commit its contents to memory!
