Works great on a Surface laptop, or any other USB-C laptop
There are many USB to Ethernet adapters you can pick up for your Surface tablet or laptop. What sets this one apart is that it supports speeds to to 2.5 Gbps instead of the more typical 1 Gbps, provided you have a network that can support those speeds. If your network cannot supports speeds that high, then this adapter is backwards compatible to 1 Gbps and 100 Mbps speeds as well.I picked up this adapter for my Microsoft Surface Go 2. It has built in Wi-Fi, but I regularly copy large files from my Surface to my servers. My network and servers support speeds up to 10 Gbps. Using this adapter I get transfer speeds much faster than Wi-Fi 6 or a typical 1 Gbps ethernet adapter. When you first plug in this adapter, it’s best to be connected to Wi-Fi so that Windows can download the latest driver. The adapter uses a Realtek chipset, so Windows automatically detects it and loads the correct driver. The adapter is well built and has two nice link and activity LEDs. It’s small and portable if you need to take it with you. There is a blue LED on the USB-C end to indicate the adapter is powered up.This adapter works equally well on my HP laptops. While it’s labeled as designed for Surface, that just means it’s been verified with the Microsoft Surface devices. Since the Surface devices are Windows computers, it will work on almost any Windows computers. Because it uses a common Realtek chipset, it should also work on a MAC or a Linux computer.

Link Speed Good 2500/2500, actual speed Bad
I got the adapter to try out faster ethernet on my home network. I have 2gb Service from AT&T which tests from the router to the network at 2.5gb. I know that there isn’t really any sites out there that feed the bandwidth but was curious how it would perform.First I have to say that the adapter does report a connected to my network at the full 2.5gb Duplex as shown in the connection screen shot at 2500/2500 so that’s good. I tested it on both our Surface GO 3 since the listing says Designed for Surface. I also connected to my Galaxy S22 Ultra and it also showed full 2.5gb link speed. The packaging was plain but fine, no issues. The build quality seems fine as well. That’s where the good ended. The actual speed tests are just poor, much slower than the WiFi 6e that both devices have a down on the Screen shots of the tests.I’m not sure why the throughput is so slow, the 1gb ethernet I already am running is faster as well as the WiFiI’ll keep tinkering over time and will update if I get any different results.

Tested better than 1 gigabit, but unable to test full 2.5.
I’m afraid I’m just starting to get gigabit capable devices, so I wasn’t able to test this as well as I would like. I tested this on a Windows 10 Lenovo Yoga laptop plugged straight through a CAT 8 cable to a 2.5 Gb PCI-E card on my desktop and tested with iperf. Testing 1 Gb to 1 Gb devices, I have yet to get higher than 850 Mbps actual transmit in iperf tests, and this adapter to my desktop did 1.2 Gbps, so I can confidently say that this adapter is capable of better than 1 gigabit, but I have no way to know which piece in my test held it back to only 1.2 Gbps transfer speed. It certainly works, and I had no troubles using it and it was perfect plug-and-play in my Windows 10 OS. When I can verify its top speed, I’ll update accordingly.

Not Able To Use It With My Surface Pro 7
I am computer literate and I work with computer professionally. While I am not an expert in everything computer, I have done my fair share of network troubleshooting.I could not get this network adapter to work with my Surface Pro 7 with Windows 11. I attached the Ethernet Adapter to my only USB C port. The first time I tried it, I noticed that my speeds were much slower than when I used my WiFi. The second time I tried it, I noticed that my speeds were half as fast as my WiFi using Ookla Speed Test. I also noticed that after a few minutes, I would lose connectivity altogether while using this Ethernet Adapter. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the adapter, but I encountered the same issues. To verify that it was not my equipment, I also tried the test with the same cables using the Microsoft Travel Hub. The travel hub worked fine and did not lose connectivity. The Ethernet adapter itself has the design that matches the Surface design with the rectangular and blocky adapter. It complements the look of your Surface device.I really wanted to like this adapter, but I could not get it to work with my Surface Pro 7. It should not have been this difficult to get a simple adapter like this working, especially since it was “Designed for Surface”.

No Surface? No problem!
While this adapter is marketed as a Microsoft Surface adapter, it’s really just a USB-C 2.5gbe NIC.. which is great! The form factor is about what you’d expect for most USB-C NICs; the cord is around 5″ long (not including the connector or NIC body) and is pretty flexible. The USB-C connector has a small light on it on the Cable Matters logo (it’s a dim blue) which is kind of pointless but also neat. The body of the NIC feels heavier than I’d expect, and feels almost metallic.. maybe some kind of composite, or just has a little heft and a paint job to make it feel “expensive”. It does seem to have a good bit of thermal mass though, which is helpful because under prolonged loads 2.5gbe NICs can get toasty.Performance is good! It installed automatically with built-in drivers (Win11) and negotiated immediately at 2.5gbps to my no-name 10gbe SFP. I get around 2.3-2.4gbps, which I’m very happy with, especially considering the price. This adapter is small enough that it could be a travel adapter, but I’d be a little concerned that over time the cord would suffer; it’s got a premium enough feel that it might hold up, but it’s also similar to the Apple cables that feel nice then disintegrate over a year or two. Whatever the case on the cable, this adapter should work with any USB-C host, whether a Microsoft Surface or not, and should be compatible with a USB-C female to USB-A male adapter for broader compatibility.
