Beware – New is not new
This was advertised as a new wifi extender. The unit I received has been opened, set up and the returned. Then it was sold to me. I am very disappointed to receive a used and returned item for something that was supposed to be new.

Good unit, but setup rocky until I found D-Link’s mobile app that they seem to want to keep a secret
The DAP-1520 / AC750 range extender seems to work well for me so far, for my simple situation. I would give it 5 stars except that setup was not smooth. D-Link has a MOBILE SETUP APP that worked well for me but they don’t advertise the app at all. The device comes with a simplistic quick install guide. At the end of that guide thereâs a completely inconspicuous note telling you thereâs a full manual online. Only the full manual tells you about the app. There are three setup methods for the DAP-1520- Using the WPA button- Using the web interface (from a web browser on a computer)- Using the D-Link setup app on an iPhone, etc.The first two methods failed for me, while the third method (the app) was successful. I think the first method failed because my base station’s WPA button doesn’t do what it should. To install the DAP-1520, the first thing I did was put the unit into an outlet near my WiFi base station (which is an ActionTec WCB3000N WiFi Extender). Pressing the WPA button on the base station (for several seconds) and then walking over to the DAP-1520 and pressing its WPA button would not create a connection. As I said, this appears to be an ActionTec problem. Then I tried using the web browser (Firefox on Windows 7). None of the recommended URLs could connect to the DAP-1520. I tried http://dlinkapp.local. I tried the URL on the configuration card – http://dlinkappxxxx.local where xxxx is specific to the unit. I tried the IP address 192.168.0.50 as indicated in the quick install manual. My ActionTecâs IP address is 192.168.1.18.Finally I found the iPhone app. It found the DAP-1520 via WiFi and walked me quickly through the setup. It worked quite well. Also, the quick install guide also says the MAC ID of the unit is on a label on the side of the unit. Itâs not. Itâs printed on the carton.

Not As Easy As It Looks
Simply put, I purchased this in the hopes of extending the range of my wireless signal throughout my house (since we have a lot of walls in between the router & the various devices that connect to it. Now that that’s out of the way, i’ll get to the pros and cons.Pros:-Simplistic packaging.-Various cards, stickers, etc etc with info on the device’s SSID, password, default admin settings, etc etc.-Somewhat small-ish (would recommend to use the bottom outlet on a wall socket or power strip), but definitely not cumbersome.-Settings manager (we’ll call it that for now) is easy to navigate. Shows you all the information you could possibly need to know about the range extender, the router it’s interfaced with, the devices currently using it (info usage, etc etc), password managing. Probably one of the better ones.Cons:-The setup is not as straightforward as DLink would have you believe. Tried manually setting it up first and it just wasn’t going anywhere. Ended up using WPS and was only able to get the phones & tablets to connect right after completion. Had to go into Command Prompt and use the “ipconfig/release & renew” in order for the laptop to work with it (So for you that may still experience problems with it, give that a try). Probably wouldn’t hurt to update your device’s wireless drivers just in case.-The size. For what it does, it sure could be a lot bigger (think of what access points/repeaters/range extenders looked like not even a decade ago) But for there not being a ethernet port, my opinion is that it could be a little bit smaller in the hopes of not being so “constricted” in your options on which outlet to plug it into.I’m giving it three out of five stars because of the problems that I ran into with it that just made it time consuming. I’m sure there are other range extenders out there that are easier to setup and use. It’s just that this could have been a lot, lot easier, and once again, I hope that those of you who are having problems see this and are able to work past the issues.

Set up was pretty easy (the steps can take a little bit of …
I did (almost too much) research on a solution to be able to cut the cable and switch to an online “cable” service via Roku because we only have DSL Internet, but I really wanted to see if I could figure out how to make this work. Before this purchase the Roku had worked, but only with a “fair” or “good” signal strength connection and the online TV service we tried came in, but things came up slowly, weren’t clear, and paused during broadcast/play. Although this is labeled just as a WiFi extender it made a SIGNIFICANT difference in the power of my WiFi at the other end of my condo (the modem is in our office area at one end; the TV at the other). Set up was pretty easy (the steps can take a little bit of waiting time–if it doesn’t find the connection the first time, just run the wizard again). I set up both 2.4 GHz and 5 and I opted to use the 5 for only the TV–just to try and cut down on any other interference. I had also moved my modem up higher in the office (that alone improved a bit of signal strength as shown via a Speedtest.net before-and-after comparison in the room), but this WiFi extender is what really did the trick. At first, partly because of the guides for placement, I thought I should try to be closer to the modem–maybe just past halfway from the modem and slightly closer to the TV. It helped, but not enough. Then I plugged it into a wall in our front hallway because the TV was just on the other side and that was the turning point. Signal strength for the Roku then came up as “excellent” and now things come up faster on the TV and we are using our HD antenna and online service to watch shows. I turned in the cable box and we’re officially cable free. 🙂 I will note that my condo is not large–so even putting the extender at the other end near the TV itself doesn’t mean it’s super far (4 rooms away), but my purpose was to get the Roku help and it wanted it close by so that was my guide in placement.

This product seems high quality and does the job its intended to do which in my case was extend my network.ProsLooks goodUn-noticeable next to white wallsStrong and reliable connectionEasy to use local setup pageProvides 5G and 2G connectionsConsThe download speed is a lot slower than if i was directly connected despite it not being that far away from the routerIt slows down when multiple devices are using itIt gets quite warm to touchOverall if you are just looking to extend phones and laptops which do not require ultra-high speed internet then this is for you and the 2.4GHZ connection does extend very far so i like it for that and this is why i would recommend it.SPEEDS:when i am connected to 5GHZ on my PCâ with a very fast capable wifi adapter the speeds from the extender are at 50mbps maximum i have seen so far despite my router giving out 160mbps, the upload is good and maxes out at the normal router speed of 12mbps. although a little disappointed about the speed, this speed is well capable enough for any type of internet usage such as HD streaming.
