Good things come in spartan packaging.
A common issue with many people is weak points in their Wi-Fi network, particularly when you have a 2 story residence and only the default wireless router from the ISP. This is the set up I had for a few years and had been investigating mesh networking options to attempt to remedy that situation for not only me, but the other 5 people who live with me who complain of dropout or just low signal strength consistently. For that reason, when I was selected to test and review this mesh system I was pretty excited and had some expectations on how it might improve my current wireless set up. I expected three things; 1: The connection would be more consistent in low signal places. 2: It would be essentially a drop in solution and gel well with my other networking equipment. 3: It would be simple and powerful for both casual people and power users like myself. I work in IT and see enterprise grade equipment frequently and have no issues with digging deeper than most folks to really get the most out of my gadgets, but I have a basic rule for devices for me to recommend them, which is I need to be able to sit my mom down in front of it and I could reasonably expect her to figure it out.Now letâs talk about the device itself, it comes in very plain spartan packaging barely larger than the device itself which is barely bigger than many gum containers Iâve amassed over the years. It is also very light weight and minimal in terms of ports. That was something that disappointed me if it was intended to replace my ISPâs router as it has only one LAN port, one WAN port, and power. I instead opted to disable my ISPâs wireless capabilities and plug this into the router, download the app, and connect to it. I was amazed how simple the app was and how quickly it configured itself. All I had to do was enter my desired SSID and password and after that it was basically up and running. Fortunately every device that was not on the 5ghz band automatically reconnected like nothing happened, for this reason I at first thought there was no 5ghz signal, but to my surprise it not only has one, but auto switches between the 5 and 2.4ghz signals for the sake of load balancing and speed. Thatâs a feature I donât tend to see on many consumer products that Iâve played with and I was pretty impressed with it.One quick tangent is on that of the app used to manage the device. The app is very easy to use and is quick download on any iOS or Android device while I did not have any chance to test it on iOS the fact that itâs only controlled by an app does concern me as far as future proofing the product. I would like to see an IP address that you can connect to do administrator tasks on the device for those of us who want a bit more control over the product. The app while simple and very clear and easy to use, is in some ways a bit too simple in that regard. It gives some options for customization, but if youâre the type who really wants to dive into the metal of your device and customize every setting, you may be a little disappointed. Iâd say for the majority of people however the fact itâs app only is probably not going to be an issue.Once the device was set up and going it was on to testing and I got some rather surprising results. I noticed right away that 90% of my weak signal devices suddenly had double strength if not full signal, and I had no fewer than 20 devices connected and all working fine. The benchmarks were a little confusing as it seemed like the download speeds were slightly slower, however I think its because I was bumped to the 2.4ghz band whereas I tested on the 5ghz of my old router. Plus the speed differences seemed to only exist within those benchmarks anyway, as in casual, everyday usage seemed to be just as smooth as the old one. In other rooms than my own however, the speed was more consistent and even a wireless printer that I previously had to install a Wi-Fi repeater just to get it to connect, now synced up flawlessly with the mesh system. From end to end on my house network I was impressed to see how stable and reliable it was no matter where I went. I did notice however one of the weakest Wi-Fi spots was still pretty weak, however I believe thatâs due to how many walls were between it and the mesh and to the meshâs credit it actually had signal there, whereas the default router plain did not reach it.Ok now that Iâve spoken about the device at length letâs look at the three criteria Iâve laid out;1: The connection would be more consistent in low signal places.2: It would be essentially a drop in solution and gel well with my other networking equipment.3: It would be simple and powerful for both casual people and power users like myself. The first point is a resounding success! I got stronger more consistent signal in areas that previously gave me trouble. The second point is mostly true, but some set up may be required if you want to keep somethings hardwired or want more control over things like DHCP settings. Even with that in mind it does gel nicely and works well with my other networking equipment in use. The last point is true for the causal user especially. I do believe this product was thoroughly designed to be a drop in solution for the average person to expand their Wi-Fi with a mesh system, and in that regard itâs a really solid good product. For the power user it will definitely work well for what itâs designed to do, however the lack of customization may disappoint a power user. Over all, what do I think? I think its an excellent product that passes the âmomâ test (Can I sit my mom down in front of it and I could reasonably expect her to figure it out?) The answer to that is a resounding yes, and why I can confidently recommend this product to the average user who needs to expand their Wi-Fi with a mesh system.

Compact unit, big range, straightforward app
This product is super compact. I was surprised by the actual size. The current router I have had since 2017. I had to have it replaced once under warranty and have never been super satisfied with the company so I decided to give another router a look. This popped up as an ad so I decided to give it a try.As you can see, much smaller real estate being taken up on my desk. Setup was very straight forward and the app is super simple – you don’t need an IT background to install this but you will need to know how to use an app and smartphone. It only has one local LAN port so you will need a switch. Most gamers or heavy duty users that are connected to hardlines will already have these. I personally will need another one as my current router had all four LAN ports being utilized.I tested the wifi signal strength in my detached garage where I had a signal, albeit a weak one, on my previous router. I was surprised to see that this unit had a stronger connection even with no external antennae. This was 50 feet away from router poiny and through two sets of walls. I’m thoroughly impressed with this unit. I only got the 1 pack so I cannot tell you how good the switching over between points is.I was concerned that I’d have an issue on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands as I didn’t see a way to set up two different connections. I have some equipment that only can function on the former. I was pleased to find out that you only need one wifi connection and the device properly feeds both bands at the same time. I was able to connect via 5 on my smartphone at the same time as multiple other devices connected to 2.4. There’s a feature in the app to enable 2.4 only (temporarily) in order to make it easier to find the wifi band for those devices.I will note that I was not able to find a way to hide the SSID which I am apt to do on most routers. It is not a deal breaker for me, but it may be for others.

Great Product!!
I got the router a few days ago. I got the âMidnight Blackâ version which looks amazing. I have to say its the fastest and easiest setup Iâve ever done. Within a minute I had a wifi connection on a computer. Downloaded the app on my phone and set up a password and an account. App has most of the settings. Speed is fantastic. I have 1200 square foot house and it reaches everywhere. There are no blackspots in the house now. Even on a fire stick at the furthest point from the router I could stream 4K content receiving over 100 mb download speeds. Tried using a VPN and had no problems. Netflix showed 60mb connection on another set. Have multiple phones, tablets, laptops, and streaming devices connected all the time. No disconnections so far and no complaints. Great! Then on other bands. I put it in the middle of the house for a better range. The signal is very strong and the app helps me give additional control to see which device connected to which node. I can control the access to the devices connected via the app. The signal strength at the porch is also awesome(which is a not reachable area with myprevious router). Though the product documentation is not great, the installation is easy with the guided MyMesh App.
