As much as we would all like to believe that our government and law enforcement agencies can protect us from crime and terrorism, our safety is not completely assured. Certainly we cannot take the law into our own hands, but we can use legal preventative measures to protect ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our assets. Surveillance detection (SD) is a technique that has been around for a long time and is now being revitalized and implemented worldwide for the war against terror. Our book explores the ways in which people from all walks of life can use SD as a viable preventative measure for the threats against them. Regardless if you are a housewife who is a victim of domestic violence or a contractor riding in a convoy in Iraq, this book will help you learn to protect yourself. If you are a corporation that has become a symbolic target for terrorists or an industrial facility with hazardous materials, this book will show you how to use surveillance detection to protect your property and personnel. The majority of criminals and terrorists intent on carrying out any type of crime or attack have an Achilles heel that we can exploit; they (or someone associated with them) must go out and conduct surveillance on their target in order to develop a successful plan of attack. Using surveillance detection allows us to intercept them at this early stage in order to prevent the crime or attack. We believe that the more widespread the use of surveillance detection becomes, the safer our world will be.

How much is your life worth?
I am going to give this book 5 stars for two reasons. #1) the subject matter is critical to know if you want to enhance your odds of not becoming a victim, or possibly surviving if you are being selected. #2) the material is suitable for everybody, to include your average soccer mom or Joe 6-pack. While I, and people like me, may know quite a bit about this overall subject matter, that knowledge on my part does the average person no good whatsoever. What matters is what knowledge and training they already have, and possess in advance. This book is highly useful in that regard. If you accept the premise that nobody will ever care more about your personal security than you, and that you are the person with the ultimate responsibility for the security of you and your loved ones, then this book will elevate your game. My copy will be staying in my personal library. I believe it’s that good.

If you want to develop a deep understanding of surveillance countermeasures theory and practices to defeat the most sophisticated and dangerous threats, check out âSurveillance Countermeasures: The Professionalâs Guide to Countering Hostile Surveillance Threatsâ

Good Book on Basics
This is a very good intro to SD and one of the few books on the market covering a subject that should be at the forefront of most security practitioners’ minds if they deal with securing facilities or at-risk personnel. SD is a largely underated but very proactive means of keeping your facilities and personnel safe. The book could use some editing but most of the shortcomings are small and I feel like I’m nitpicking pointing them out. As an example: In one hypothetical scenario in the book the director of security for the firm, a former FBI agent, changes from her “security uniform” to her street close to conduct an SD effort. Now I have been in this business for more than 15 years and have yet to meet a corporate security director who wore a uniform. Minor thing – yes – but those things always make you question the author’s knowledge – at least of the private sector – a little bit. Also through out the book the surveillance teams or surveillants are constantly referred to as “surveillance”. Surveillance is the action – the people doing it are surveillants. Nitpicky? Yeah, sorry I told you so. The book would also have benefited from an index.I also wish this book had devoted some tie to the survfeillance detection route. It is mentioned and dismissed as an “advanced technique” and bordering on countersurveillance. I disagree – an SDR cna be a very useful tool, especially for an individual conducting his or her own SD.Despite those criticisms – a very useful book – I highly recommend it to practioners in the security field as well as anyone traveling or living overseas — especially in developing nations.

Good introduction to SD…
This book provides a good introduction to surveillance detection to anyone new to the art. It gives all the neccessary info on how to put together an SD Plan as well as a few other worthwhile tips. But it could have been better… For example, there is no in-depth information on the terrorist attack cycle (and where surveillance/intelligence gathering fit into it), no discussion on surveillance indicators of potential hostiles (such as target fixation) and very little in the way of professional surveillance tradecraft tactics (while most terrorist surveillance operatives are only practicing a basic level of tradecraft, there are still some pros out there). Having said that, perhaps these things were left out for a more strategic reason (ie. so it doesn’t get into the hands of the terrorists).I’d recommend this book to those out there wanting to learn a bit more about SD, those wanting to put together a personal awareness package together for their staff, and those wanting to educate their security personal on detecting potential hostile surveillance which acts as a pre-cursor to an attack.

Don’t.
This book contains enough acronyms to make a .gov planner blush! Full of generalities and lacking in specifics. It would behoove the authors to fill the reader in on HOW surveillance is conducted, (three man walking, three car mobile etc,) to help the reader recognize them. Tricks that private detectives use. Things like that. This was 2 hours of my life reading that I will never get back. There are plenty of other books on this subject with more detail out there, I feel as if I have wasted my time reading this one.

A great book to enhance your safety
So me great info to help keep yourself safe. Basic enough for anyone to benefit from the book, but also some more advanced stuff, too.
