The author technicians trust solves one of electronics’ most vexing challenges
In this completely updated new edition of his best-selling guide, Homer Davidson gives you hands-on illustrated guidance on how to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of electronic products — when you can’t get your hands on the schematic diagrams. One of the most respected names in consumer electronics, Davidson — who actually ran his own successful radio and TV repair business for more than 40 years — shows you how to diagnose and solve circuit and mechanical problems in car stereos, cassette players, CD players, VCRs, TVs and TV/VCR combos, DVD players, power supplies, remote controls, and more. Included are more than 400 detailed drawings and photographs that illustrate the most efficient methods for locating, testing, and repairing defective components. In addition, Davidson offers:
* A list of common problems that crop up in each type of electronic unit
* A corresponding chart that points out where to check for those problems
* An abundance of case histories that demonstrate how repairs were actually made
* Instruction on how to tackle “tough dog” problems
Indispensable to today’s professional electronic repair technicians, this gold mine of practical guidance will also prove highly useful to electronic engineers, sophisticated hobbyists, and advanced students of electronics.

Surprisingly relevant in 2024
If you are a fixer or maker and love music, get this book.If youâre working on gear thatâs more modern than what is in the book, read the actual text anyway.Every strategy and principle is useful today. There is even the updated version that discusses surface mount electronics. Finally, it really does live up to the title, the author’s conceptual flow really does empower you to be successful without a schematic diagram.

One of a kind book
This book is perfect for someone without alot of experience. The author imparts his years of knowledge about what to look for when fixing certain electronics. Probably a more experienced tech already knows the techniques discussed in the book. The author uses alot of examples of troubleshooting actual devices. I found myself skipping these sections as they are units that are hopelessly outdated. But the instruction imparted about what testing tools to use and how to use them in real-world situations in priceless. The book is great for gaining insight into how to go about troubleshooting electronics like a pro. The downside are the examples using outdated devices and the somewhat repetitive ordering of some of the sections. This book could use a rewrite to restructure the chapters and also toss the info on obsolete devices such as tape decks and analog TVs.

Very Informative
This book is for someone who is well experienced with a multimeter and scope. The only issue that I had is that some old components are hard to find replacements for.

What I find positive:- helpful schematics- practical hints in the text- simple illustrations for meassuringWhat I find negative:- very outdated. The blurb on the back cover “completely updated” is not true (3rd edition 2004). TVs still have fly back transormers in this book- I miss structure. Information is repeated numerous times and randomly spread.- Missing appendix (sources for spare parts, safety regulations, some helpful tables)Conclusion: there are better books available. Reading it is very time consuming with low efficency.

this is a nice book to read well lead out in colour and just what you need to understand your read.
Sfj Flipsen –
the book is outdated, focussing on electronic devices which are not customely used any more. Examples are Video Recorders, walkmans et cetera. This book deserves a major update with current (e.g. smartphones and laptop computers) and future products (IoT)

good practical book but a bit out dated now, however very handy for any one out there who hates throwing any electronic gadget in the bin.
